CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
STUDY TASK OUIL503
As an illustrator I feel that my strengths lie in Narrative & Storytelling also somewhat in Publishing & Book Design and Editorial (but not so much reportage), and Object and Environment. Narrative is what drives me when I create an image, and always strive to have my work in context to a certain idea or thought. I feel narrative is within all these fields and is a very strong aspect of what drives them as well.
Within the Creative industries I feel conflicted because I would like to be a freelance artist but also play part in the third sector of our economy. It, in my opinion, is the sector that gives back in meaningful ways as best it can, and keeps the humanity alive in a system built for business and profit. This isn't as true as I would like it to be, as we know charities don't use our monies as transparently as they try to let on.
I haven't really figured out how to marry the two ideals, because the creative industries is stronger within the Service Industry, which doesn't seem to cater to any actual wellbeing other than being profitable and allowing people to live comfortably. There is also the association of how much money I would be able to earn myself if I pursued a career within the third sector, which is the irony of it. I think that within a lot of people, not only artists, there is the urge to want to give back to their communities but our economy is not structured in a way where doing so provides economic security. I personally would not like to earn an immeasurable amount of wealth, but I would like the freedoms that come with not having to worry what amount is in my bank account.
