Penguin

For penguin I am really interested in the To Kill A Mockingbird, and In Cold Blood covers. I think its really cool that those two books out of all the books in Penguin's list are being revamped together, seeing that the authors were friends in real life.

I have developed a couple of initial drafts on To Kill a Mockingbird. Whilst doing my research I noticed that a great majority of the covers for this novel have a mockingbird on the cover. I want t steer away from that so I decided that it might be cool to incorporate my favourite elements from the book. I think the book has a big sense of duality. First there's the fact that we experience the story through Scouts' eyes, a very young and naive girl. Along with the fact that there are some really adult and chilling themes going on in the book, there is a sense of childish wonder and adventure. Scout is curious about the legend of her neighbor and has unexpected gifts given to her in this mysterious hole in a tree. I think this makes for a really striking image.

My initial idea therefore was to have scout peering into the hollow of the tree and seeing from inside the tree's perspective we see one of the gifts, a watch.

This is also a bit of a symbolic image, seeing as the book is perceived by her world view. Another symbolic element of this scene would be the watch. It is one of the gifts Boo Riley gives the children, but throughout the novel, time is a crucial factor. People are running out of it, Scouts' life is changing from that of childish play to much more adult issues.
